Ajrakh Saree

The art of Ajrakh has travelled a long way, right from the mediaeval times to today. Basically, Ajrak is a block-printed textile that is resist-dyed using natural blue and red dyes made from indigo and madder. The art is as old as the concept of saree itself and has evolved gracefully, at every step. This traditional hand printing method dates back to 4500 years ago. Earlier, Ajrak art was made by the Khatri community, living on the banks of river Sindh, which is now in Pakistan. In the 16th century these families were said to have migrated to Kutch where they settled in Dhamadka due to its close proximity to a river to wash their fabrics. It takes skilful hands to make this art and takes 14-21 days to complete as it involves various stages of dyeing and block printing. So next time you decide to buy this beautiful piece of art, you are actually buying a piece of our rich history.
