A symbol of timeless elegance, saree has been wooing the world with its charm and grace since time immemorial. Traditionally, sarees are worn by the women of India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka and Nepal.

An essence of rich and diverse Indian heritage, saree can either be an heirloom passed down through generations, evoking a feeling of nostalgia and memory, or merely an outfit worn on a daily basis. Be it on the streets or fashion runways, sarees have swayed and influenced fashion designers across the world. 

An unstitched garment ranging from 3.5 yards to 9 yards in length, Sarees can be draped in more than one hundred ways depending on different parts of India – such as Kanjeevaram silk sarees from Tamil Nadu, brocaded Banarasi sarees from Varanasi, Paithani sarees from Maharashtra and so on. This versatile fabric can be styled in both conventional and contemporary ways.

It is believed that the modern front pleat style of wearing the saree, with puff sleeved blouse and petticoat, was popularised by a Bengali woman called Jnanadanandini Devi who learned to wear it from Parsi women in Bombay in 1870.

Types of Sarees

BANARASI SAREE

One of the most famous sarees in the world, Banarasi is the pride of the ancient city of Varanasi, Uttar Pradesh. Handcrafted with heavy intricate designs and detailed embroidery woven in gold and silver brocade or zari, makes Banarasi silk saree is a must have during festivals and weddings, especially in an Indian bride’s trousseau. Pashmina Banarasi has won every women's heart because of its range of colours. Apart from Katan (pure silk), nowadays Banarasi sarees come in different patterns and fabrics such as Organza (Kora), Shattir, Georgette, Jangla as well as Tissue.

  

KANJEEVARAM SAREE

Originated from Kanchipuram, a temple town of Thiruvannamalai. in Tamil Nadu, Kanjeevaram silk saris are the most preferred choices for weddings. The saree is famous for its unique weaving technique that makes it last for generations. The pride of South India, these expensive silk sarees are known for their royal and glossy look, featuring contrasting bright colours with colourful motifs all over the saree and intricate designs in border and pallu woven with golden zari. It usually takes anywhere between 10 and 20 days to make one saree, depending on the zari work. Woven with Mulbary silk threads, Kanjeevaram saree has an extraordinary luster, texture and finish.
