Patola Saree

Patola saree, a legend in weaves from Patan region of Gujarat, is a symbol of royalty, aristocracy and pride. In olden days, Patola saree was considered a prized possession and a sign of social status amongst Gujarati women, worn exclusively on special occasions as these sarees are very expensive. Patola silk sarees are made with unique technique -- hand dyed based on the design and then finely woven together. Patola sarees are double Ikkat silk fibre involving tie-dye method, and woven with geometric design and motifs across the fabric. Patola sarees are reversible and look exactly the same on both sides. It takes about 6 to 7 months to make this unique creation. The complexity and time-intensiveness is what makes Patola an expensive wear. It is said that in the 12th century, around 700 silk weavers belonging to Salvi caste from Karnataka and Maharashtra shifted to Gujarat and they became famous for weaving Patolas.
